August 19th at 1:00, The Britannia Panopticon

25 Jun

The Viennese Ensemble is pleased to be playing at the Britannia Panopticon on August 19th, from 1:00 until 3:00. According to Judith Bowers, the Panopticon’s manager and avenging angel, this incredibly cool and as-yet unrenovated theatre is the oldest surviving music hall in the world. It came into use in 1857 and closed its doors in 1938. You can read about its early history here and hear its twentieth century story here.

This performance is free, although we ask that you make a donation to the theatre. We’ll be selling our CDs as well, with 50% of profits going toward the Panopticon renovation.

We’re looking forward to playing at this venue and we hope that a lot of people will come out to see the Panopticon and make a little donation. Although we’re not playing music hall repertoire, we do play music from exactly the time period when the Panopticon was in its heyday. This one should be fun.
